see the elephant.

my old college pal ryan up and turned himself into a videographer, and his latest work to date, see the elephant!, is also far and away his most ambitious.

from the site:
An immersive four-screen video installation with surround sound audio that features convergent viewpoints during the 2004 Republican National Convention (RNC). The Republican National Convention was held in New York City at Madison Square Garden August 30th through September 2nd. The four video trajectories take place inside the RNC, outside the venue with the authorities, in the streets with the demonstrators, and at arms-length with mass media. Content for the projected piece includes natural sound, impromptu interviews, and overlapping content with the intent of creating an intelligible, multi-linear, political narrative.

courtney and i went to last night's screening. immersive is definitely the word for it. there's something about seeing protestors getting the smack-down side-by-side with rich old white women fronting their utterly frightening gop bling bling — all while wolf blitzer gazes blankly out into the convention void — that really drives home the challenge this country's currently facing. we're living in some seriously different worlds.

there's another screening tonight, and a list of future showings available on the web site. highly recommended; not just by me, but also the sf weekly and the bay guardian.
